This week marks the beginning of summer for our kids as well as many more across the country!
Like most kids, ours are excited that school’s out for summer - cue the Alice Cooper song in your head if you are like me! They are looking forward to filling every day with fun, not bogged down by the daily grind of learning in school, am I right?
As a parent, summer creates a different type of navigation than the school year with summer activities like camp, sports, piano and more, not only in the evening but during the daytime hours while juggling work too.
In addition, parents may be thinking about how to help their kids continue learning even if they aren’t signed up for summer school such as reading as well as online programs such as IXL. This requires extra effort by the parents to setup and discipline to follow a routine.
There’s great value in these activities and support by parents, but I was reminded of what’s most important when I was driving down the road and Matthew West’s song hit my like a ton of bricks. My words won’t be able to do the song justice so I strongly encourage you to listen via the link below, but the message I took away is that time is the most precious commodity we have.
Kids only have 18 summers as kids. Find ways to enjoy that time with your kids and don’t over schedule them so much that those 18 summers miss out on the joy of a walk to the park, a lazy day at the beach or whatever moments of happiness allow for you to pause at least for a moment to enjoy the present knowing that before you know it, their 18 summers will be over…
