On my drive into work today, I listened to Charles Duhigg on The Peter Attia Drive podcast and one statement stopped me in my tracks: positive reinforcement is 20 times more effective than punishment when it comes to shaping behavior.
20X ?!? WOW
Duhigg, author of The Power of Habit, explained how the “cue–routine–reward” loop drives so much of what we do. Positive rewards not only feel better, they also create lasting neural pathways that make new habits stick. Punishment, on the other hand, may stop a behavior in the short term but rarely builds sustainable change.
As I listened, a few questions bubbled up:
•How can I apply this to my daily habits?
•How can I use it more intentionally in my work?
•How can I live out something a wise leader once told me: “Behavior that gets recognized gets repeated”?
•And maybe most importantly, how can I use it in my parenting?
It’s easy to focus on correcting mistakes, but what if the real magic lies in catching people doing something right and acknowledging it in the moment? Whether it’s a colleague, a child, or even yourself, the right kind of recognition can become the fuel for consistent, positive action.
How about you? Where have you seen positive reinforcement work in your life; at home, at work, or in your own habits? I’d love to hear your experiences and ideas.
