It seems like every day there’s a new study or debate about AI (artificial intelligence).
Just like any technological breakthrough there’s tremendous potential as well as potential risk. Some of what I read warns us that AI will result in the plot from The Terminator or Wall-E as a worst case scenario, job loss for many or other risks. On the other end of the spectrum the interest in companies involved with AI and amount of public discourse would indicate AI is the greatest thing since sliced bread, but I won’t get into that debate here.
I have dabbled with Chat GPT as well as Meta AI more recently and had some fun with the generative capabilities like writing a story and creating visuals. With Chat GPT I prompted the tool to write a story about the Green Bay Packers season, before they traded Aaron Rodger to the New York Jets. Chat GPT got at least one team right in the Super Bowl:
In the biggest game of the year, the Packers faced off against the Kansas City Chiefs. It was a hard-fought battle, but in the end, the Packers emerged victorious. The team celebrated together on the field, hoisting the Lombardi Trophy high.
More recently with Facebook, I was searching for some old pictures of my grandpa and came across Meta AI, then I went down a Star Wars, family dog, tuba, Brewers and 80’s cartoon induced worm hole of picture creation with a few examples below.
The pictures were pretty cool and I shared them with family and friends, but other that a bit of entertainment I didn’t get much out of the experiences.
Do I know for sure it was a waste of time?
While the there’s risk I continue dedicating more and more time to mindless scrolling and AI wormholes, by embracing new technologies, I have the potential to leverage these capabilities for other applications down the road at work or related to other interests.
Now if I have a free 15 minutes I would rather invest that time in reading or practicing skills that are important to my career, but a bit of play and exploration can be very valuable, not to mention help me stay up to date on new technology as I am certain that’s not slowing down any time soon!
I would love to hear your take on the topic!
