Pretty much everyone knows Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus, but not everyone knows Annika Sorenstam and Mickey Wright.
These four golfers are arguably the most dominant players of all time in men’s and women’s golf. If you don’t know about Annika and Mickey, I recommend you learn more about their career and success!
Regardless of the sport or profession or even individual skill, many factors determine levels of success. Some of those factors include interest, knowledge, practice, opportunity, and growth mindset to name a few. “Growth Mindset” a has been a hot topic in recent years. I won’t go into all the details about the topic here, but the basic premise is a “belief that your basic qualities are things you can cultivate through your efforts.” - Carol Dwevk
While Tiger, Jack, Annika and Mickey are all-time greats, the game of golf is being dominated right now but two other names - Scottie Scheffler and Nelly Korda. With a win today at Hilton Head, Scottie has one 4 out of the last 5 events on the PGA tour and Nelly is one better at 5 in a row including the Chevron Championship, which is a major tournament on the LPGA tour.
At this point most of us would say that both of them are at the top of their game and based upon how much money is involved with professional sports, they could retire immediately!
I can’t speak for either of them, but I am pretty certain money isn’t their motivator. According to Dan Pink’s work on intrinsic motivation, autonomy, mastery and purpose are likely at the core of their motivation.
So what does this mean for you and me? While none of us may become the next all-time great, you have tools at your fingertips that can help you improve at any skill, sport, or profession - mindset, motivation, and of course learning for example!
Back to golf for a moment, I was excited to get out for my first round yesterday. While I am excited about my own game, I am even more excited about Jack’s game. While he’s only 8, he hit a number of shots that would make almost any golfer happy and excited about coming back for more.
Not to mention I got to enjoy a beautiful day outside with my son!
