Legos are very popular in the Grom household with my daughter Hannah in constant building mode, so we have watched all the Lego movies including The Lego Batman Movie .
I was thinking about the movie this past week including the song "Friends Are Family." The lyrics to the song include: "We're not related but here's good news. Friends are the family you can choose."
Did you know? LEGO’s founder, Ole Kirk Christiansen, created the name “LEGO” from taking the first two letters of the Danish words LEG GODT, meaning “play well“.
This was the case with our family friend, Mike Christian, who passed away this past week at age 70. Mike was a friend of my uncle Steve when they were kids and over time became friends with almost everyone in our family.
He was a staple at our family cottage as well as most major holidays as well as countless additional gatherings including my friend Tim Eilbes bachelor party 20 years ago. Mike's birthday was a day after mine and frequently we celebrated his, my uncle Don, and my birthday together each July.
More recently living 300 miles away and busy with work and family activities in Minnesota, I hadn't seen him as often, although I called him to ask for advice when we purchased a pontoon boat since he had experience owning a boat. He highlighted the importance of lots of ropes and to consider a shut off switch to conserve battery so I don't go to start up the boat and run into issues with the boat starting.
Mike was a friend to many more people in the area than just my family but I am thankful he was a part of our family including many moments of happiness.
Did you know? Good friends are good for your health.
What did I learn? I've heard all the cliche's about life being short many times but Mike's passing reinforces the importance of cherishing moments of happiness and making connections with others, family AND friends!
Rest in peace, Mike. Thank you for being a friend!
