Hard Work

I’ve been thinking a lot about hard work and discipline lately, ironically during a stretch of time when I spent hours simply sitting and looking out at this view.
First, I kept coming back to our daughter Hannah. She earned the title of Hardest Worker on her swim team and received her first varsity letter as an 8th grader. She wasn’t thrilled with her times this year, but her effort, day in and day out, stood out above all. That kind of work ethic is a foundation that will serve her well far beyond swimming.
Then there’s our son Jack. He’s been dealing with some hip challenges and recently started physical therapy. It takes real discipline to show up every day and complete the exercises and stretches, even when the progress feels gradual. But it’s helping, his strength and flexibility are improving, and even though we don’t know exactly what the road ahead looks like, he’s putting in the work.
And finally, Heather and I found ourselves talking about our own routines, running, biking, lifting. None of it is easy, and carving out the time can feel impossible on some days. But we keep showing up because the payoff for our health and well-being is undeniable.
So what did all this reflection on hard work and discipline teach me?
Hard work doesn’t always guarantee the outcome you want, but it always leaves you without regret.
And that makes every ounce of effort worth it.
