Lessons From The NFL Draft

Growing up just 57 miles north of Lambeau Field, I’ve always considered myself a proud Green Bay Packers fan. So when the NFL Draft came to Green Bay, it felt like a once-in-a-lifetime event — and an easy “yes” to make the trip with two great friends, Rob Scholl and Tim Eilbes.
Walking around the draft experience surrounded by fellow football fans, I was reminded how the game can bring people together in unexpected ways.
One of the best moments came while standing in line next to a guy from St. Paul. When he heard that Rob, Tim, and I played tuba in the Wisconsin Marching Band, he shared that seeing the band perform years ago actually inspired him to pick up the tuba himself. A small moment for us — playing a halftime show during college — became a spark that changed someone else’s path.
Lesson #1: You never know when you might inspire someone.
The draft itself was an experience I’ll never forget. It’s wild to think that 600,000 people packed the streets of Green Bay over three days and millions more watched live…all to see young men’s names read aloud.
At first glance, it might seem like a strange spectacle, but as Hall of Famer Joe Thomas put it, the draft isn’t the finish line — it’s a milestone. These players have reached an important point in their journey, but the real test — how they grow, work, and persevere — is still ahead.
Lesson #2: A milestone is important, but what you do after it determines your true success.
It was a day full of friends, football, and a few powerful reminders that learning and growing really do happen everywhere — even in a sea of green and gold.
