I was first introduced to Marcus Buckingham early in my career, at a time when I was searching for where I truly fit after completing the rotational program where I began.

I read the book Now Discover Your Strengths that introduced me to the concept of strengths that are best achieved through a foundation in a persons unique talents and a journey that continues to this day.

Shortly after, I read another book by Marcus called First, Break All the Rules that introduced me to the four roles of a world class manager - select tor talent, set expectations, motivate and develop.

These two books, along with the leaders who embody the behaviors they describe, have given me both a strong foundation and a sense of grounding, while also shaping a vision for my own potential and how I can bring out the best in others so they can become their best selves.

This is why when we were moving buildings at work, and I found a copy of another Marcus Buckingham book, StandOut 2.0, I immediately added it to my collection.

The book reinforces the central message from his earlier work, don’t strive to be well-rounded; strive to become more powerfully yourself, while adding a practical assessment that helps you identify the roles you’re naturally wired to play and where you can contribute most effectively at work.

The assessment identified my primary roles as Pioneer and Connector. What stood out to me is how my StrengthsFinder themes - Responsibility, Harmony, Includer, Discipline, and Achiever, with Learner also in my top 10 - uniquely position me to turn new ideas into reality. This is especially true in my focus area of learning and enablement, where I thrive on connecting people and bringing concepts to life in meaningful, practical ways.

What did I learn? At a minimum, it reinforced that I’m on the right path and should continue leaning into these areas even more. Beyond that, since the assessment is free, I plan to share it with my team as a way to deepen my commitment to bring out the best in others and driving greater impact through our work.

How are you intentionally using your strengths to create impact in your work or life right now?
