This past weekend, I stepped into my first head coaching role for my son’s basketball team.
I’ve been assisting all season, but with Coach Jarrod out sick, it was up to me to run practice and lead the game.
The season has had its ups and downs in the win/loss column, but the boys are improving daily. Jarrod has built a culture focused on learning, fundamentals, and positive reinforcement, which I aimed to continue.
I was a little nervous, so I prepared the lineup the night before, encouraged each player during warmups, and chewed gum like all the great coaches on TV 😉! The game started rough, and the other team pulled ahead. I called a timeout, made an adjustment, and the boys responded with great defense, but our shots wouldn’t fall.
In the end, we lost. I updated Jarrod, and his main concern was whether the boys got frustrated—they didn’t! The culture held strong.
Later, I connected with my high school coach, Jay Wolf, who reinforced the value of learning through losses and his pride for my progress as a coach.
I lead and coach in my day job, but this is outside my comfort zone. That’s okay—we’re all learning.
