Volunteer learning

This weekend, my daughter and her friends from Skyview Middle School’s National Junior Honor Society volunteered with us at the Help At Your Door Spring Gala. They set up silent auction items, arranged table settings, and stayed through the end to help clean everything up.
It wasn’t glamorous work. It was the behind-the-scenes effort that makes everything else possible.
And yet… one of them said it was “lowkey fun. That’s the part I keep coming back to.
Because what they experienced wasn’t just volunteering, it was contribution. It was seeing firsthand how much effort goes into creating something meaningful for others. It was working as a team, stepping up without being asked twice, and realizing that even small tasks matter when they’re part of a bigger purpose.
They also volunteered alongside Heather and me and other volunteers, which made it even more special, different generations, working together, sharing the same goal.
They learned:
That showing up matters
That meaningful work often happens behind the scenes
That helping others can actually be fun
And maybe most importantly, they learned that purpose doesn’t always come with a spotlight.
Sometimes it looks like setting tables, organizing auction items, and cleaning up when no one is watching.
That’s learning in the flow of life.
