Helping with Purpose: Lessons from Serving on the Board of Help At Your Door

At Help At Your Door, the mission is simple and powerful: To help seniors and individuals with disabilities maintain their independence and continue living in their homes.

This short video captures it beautifully—a tribute to everyday heroes through the story of my grandma and her “circle of care” and Help At Your Door in the Twin Cities.

Serving on the board of this nonprofit has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. What began as a way to honor my grandma has become a journey of learning and leadership. I’ve gained a deeper understanding of board governance—how policy, strategy, and stewardship come together to ensure an organization’s mission is fulfilled with integrity.

I’ve stretched myself through public speaking, facilitating discussions, and sharing our mission through social media and community networking. Each board meeting, community event, and story shared has reminded me that leadership is as much about listening as it is about leading.

Most of all, I’ve learned that when you give your time with heart, you grow. And when you serve alongside passionate people working toward a greater good, you don’t just help others—you learn in the flow of life.

Jason
