“Hey, Dad, you wanna have a catch?”

This is the famous line from the 1989 movie, “Field of Dreams” starring Kevin Costner.

Yesterday, my son Jack asked me to play catch. It was right during the Packer game, but I immediately thought of the movie and said, “ABSOLUTELY!”

Jack started using his little glove from when he was 5 or 6, stating that he wasn’t strong enough to use the bigger glove we bought for him. I told him I thought it was time to try. He started catching better than with the old glove, catching many in a row and adding speed to his throws with pretty good accuracy.

He and I were smiling pretty much the whole time, except when we needed to give the “game face” look. Looking back on those 20 minutes today, I am thankful for the time and hopeful we get a chance to play catch for many years to come. Maybe I’ll even get a chance to watch him pitch in a game sometime?

I’m less focused on that vision, though, as sometimes putting too much pressure on future potential takes joy away from the moment.

What did I learn? If your kid wants to spend time with you, say yes! Stay in the moment - you and those you are with will benefit from your presence.

P.S. If you haven’t seen Field of Dreams, I strongly recommend it! Maybe even watch it with your parents and/or kids.
