When Words Don’t Mean Anything (and That’s the Point): What the “6-7” Craze Taught Me About Parenting

Heather and I have been cracking up for weeks over how often “6-7” sneaks into our house. It makes no sense to anyone over 25 and perfect sense to our kids. Shouted down hallways, dropped into conversations, whispered with a grin: “You just don’t get it, Dad.”
A couple nights ago, Jack and I were watching the Brewers game. Rookie phenom Jacob Misiorowski came in to pitch. I asked Jack how tall he thought he was.
“6’3?” he guessed.
I told him, “He’s 6-7.” Jack’s eyes lit up. “HE’S 6-7?!” he yelled, immediately wanting to tell his sister, Hannah.
It was already 10 p.m., so I pulled up Misiorowski’s ESPN profile, snapped a picture with a giant arrow pointing to the height, and texted it to her. She was asleep, but the next day, when I picked her up from swimming, she was already making her own “6-7” references.
Heather and I laughed too not because of the number, but because we got it. We were in their world, if only for a moment.
“6-7” isn’t about numbers. It’s a social media meme, a shared joke, a signal that says, “We’re in on this.”
As parents, we want to understand the why. Kids? They’re more interested in belonging, laughing, and connecting. The phrase doesn’t need meaning, it works by doing something: bringing joy.
Sometimes the best way to connect with our kids isn’t decoding every trend, it’s joining in.
Trends fade, but laughter lasts. So next time your kid shouts “6-7!” Smile, shout it back, and maybe send a screenshot. You’ll be surprised how far two numbers can take you.
