Throughout my life I have looked up to leaders who have not only excelled in their work but also gave back in their communities.
I was thinking about one of the first leaders I encountered in my career this weekend as I watched Marquette punch their ticket to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA basketball tournament. While I am a Wisconsin Badger fan through and through, I still remember the opportunity to hear from then head coach Tom Crean as part of our Strong Start leader development program and a few years later attending Marquette for graduate school during the Dwayne Wade led Final Four run.
Who is that leader? It's Dick Strong, the founder of Strong Capital Management or Strong Funds where I started my career. He is a huge supporter of Marquette, so much so that the university recognized him just two years ago with the Friend Of The University Award.
From everything I remember about Dick and what I read and heard, he offered his leadership and support not to get credit nor get his name on building for his legacy. Instead he was driven by his belief in the mission of the institution and basketball program and the benefit to the community and the state through having an elite program.
I am thankful to have looked up to many leaders over the years who have demonstrated similar commitment to serving in the community which has inspired me to do the same.
In my current role as volunteer board member for Help At Your Door, we are focused on helping seniors and those with disabilities remain independent in their homes. We are holding a Spring Gala in just over two weeks. The gala will include Keynote Speaker, Alexis Rodgers from KARE 11, a silent auction, dinner, and fun activities throughout the evening!
The goal of our gala is to support the mission through raising money and awareness, especially the need for volunteer drivers to help with transportation of seniors. The demand for these services has grown beyond our supply of volunteer drivers.
Please consider joining us at the event or volunteering!
I bet you will learn something too if you join us!
