Whether at work, hobbies, or back in my school days, I have to admit that I get frustrated when it doesn’t feel like I am making progress. Has this ever happened to you?
We know intellectually that progress isn’t linear and takes time and practice whether you follow the 10,000 hours mantra from Gladwell’s “Outliers” research or the tactics recommended in “Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning,” in the moment it can feel like you are stuck in place or even at times regressing when learning a skill.
What if you could fast forward ⏩ to the future and watch yourself doing the same task and see and maybe even hear your progress?
While we haven’t mastered that time travel process yet with Doc’s Flux Capacitor (although you can buy one on Amazon), through the power of our smartphones with video we can look back and compare.
My daughter’s band at Skyview Middle School is a good example of this. Watch these two videos to hear the progress these students made under the guidance and coaching of Director Lori Bernstrom.

Pretty amazing transformation, right?
Through their regular practices each week and additional individual practice outside of school, they collectively improved by leaps and bounds. This same approach can be applied to anything you are learning.
So the next time you are frustrated 😣 when learning a skill, record a video 📹 keep practicing, then take another video months later and compare the results.
I bet you will like what you see 👁️ and hear 👂!
