What I Learned from Sammy

Sammy wasn’t just our family dog—she was a companion, a teacher, and a quiet presence who left a lasting mark on our lives. Since her recent passing, I’ve found myself reflecting on the lessons she taught me, many of which echo themes I’ve explored in previous blog posts.

Embracing the Present

Every morning around 7:00, Sammy would give me that unmistakable look, ready for our daily walk. These walks became a ritual that grounded me in the present moment. In my post Focus on the present! (April 16, 2024), I discussed the challenge of staying present amidst life’s distractions. Sammy had mastered this art, living fully in each moment and reminding me to do the same.

The Power of Habit

Our consistent walks highlighted the impact of keystone habits—those core routines that influence other aspects of our lives. In Keystone habits (January 22, 2024), I explored how certain routines can transform our days. Sammy’s daily rhythm not only structured her life but also brought stability and discipline to mine.

Finding Joy in Simple Moments

Sammy found excitement in life’s simplest pleasures—a patch of sunlight, a squirrel to chase, or the sound of her leash being picked up. She exemplified the idea that happiness often resides in small, overlooked moments. As I reflected in Happiness and learning…is there a correlation? (January 29, 2024), recognizing and appreciating these moments can significantly enhance our well-being.

Commitment and Responsibility

Caring for Sammy deepened my understanding of commitment and responsibility. In Serving in the community (March 25, 2024), I discussed the value of dedicating time and effort to others. Sammy depended on our family and through caring for her, I learned that true commitment is an act of love that enriches both parties involved.

Unconditional Love and Presence

Sammy’s unwavering loyalty and affection were daily reminders of unconditional love. Her consistent presence mirrored the sentiments I shared in Friends are family? (December 10, 2023), emphasizing the importance of being there for those we care about. Sammy’s love was a testament to the profound connections that enrich our lives.

Now that she’s gone, I feel her absence deeply. Yet, I also feel her presence in the routines she helped establish and the lessons she imparted. Sammy lived in the flow of life, and through her, I learned to do the same.

Rest well, sweet girl. Thank you for everything.
