Unless you have been living under a rock, you have heard about the boxing 🥊 match between Jake Paul and 58 year old Mike Tyson including the massive viewership that crashed Netflix.
While Mike Tyson is no longer at his peak, the combo of Jake Paul’s 20 million followers on YouTube combined with the history of Tyson’s dominance created a spectacle that caused a level of interest far beyond the quality of the the boxing match itself.
Their match isn’t what I learned this week, but Tyson’s quote resurfaced and made me think about his message.
First, I am not convinced that everyone has a plan. Setting goals and a plan to achieve those goals isn’t universal as he states in the quote, “Everyone has a plan.” I am so thankful to work alongside professionals that take the time plan our work, ensuring we have clear goals and the steps including a plan to achieve our goals.
I learned many years ago the Elegant Simplicity model from Steve Harvill of Creative Ventures that guides my planning approach in a disciplined manner with a focus and commitment to simplicity.
The second part of Tyson’s quote, “until they get punched in the face” indicates that any planning goes out the window when you face adversity.
Once again, I am thankful to get to work alongside professionals that respond to adversity and challenges with the discipline to identify the problem, pinpoint the issue, resolve what’s needed in the short term and learn from the experience.
A leader I met during the first week of my career who has become a lifelong mentor and friend taught me an approach modeled after the military “after action review.”
This Harvard Business Review article provides a detailed look into the process.
In closing, I didn’t get to see the boxing match. I tried but Netflix was down. My original plan was to take a walk down the Mike Tyson boxing memory lane, but I guess Netflix, “hit me in the face.”
In hindsight, I think I was spared the time I would have spent watching to get some extra sleep to hit the ground running the next day for a presentation I was making at the Minnesota History Center to the Daughters of the 🇺🇸 American Revolution local chapter.
